This pair of sculptures, titled "Guerrier des Amériques" by French sculptor J.J. Salmson (1823-1902), depict two American Indian warriors in a striking and detailed manner. Both figures stand proudly on round, black bases with golden accents, which enhance their presence. The sculptures are made of patinated and gilded bronce, creating a visually compelling contrast between the dark patination and gold highlights.
The warrior on the left holds a spear and shield, dressed in traditional attire with a fur garment draped across his chest and short trousers. His pose is dynamic, with one leg slightly forward, exuding a sense of readiness and strength.
The female warrior on the right is adorned with a feathered headdress and wears a richly textile, and metal armour. She holds a pineapple in her right hand which symbolises welcoming and stands confidently, her gaze directed outward. These sculptures not only capture the artistry of Salmson but also reflect a romanticized view of Native American culture from a European perspective.
